Avengers: Infinity War (2018) VFX Breakdown by DNEG
DNEG worked on 5 sequences across the film:
- The Edinburgh sequence, where Proxima and Corvus attack Vision and Scarlet Witch. This sequence included extensive character work for Proxima and Corvus along with set extensions and CG environments, digi doubles, FX magic and destruction and Vision augmentations.
- The scene in the jungle in Wakanda where Vision and Captain America fight Corvus, followed by the scene where Wanda attempts to destroy Vision with her magic.
- The scene in Knowhere, where Thanos tricks Gamora, for which we did the environment work including fully CG establishing shots and ship animation for the Benatar.
- Avengers compound interior shots, including set extensions hologram displays and Vision augmentations.
- Benatar Cockpit interiors including set extension work.
DNEG delivered around 200 animation shots on Avengers: Infinity War. The animation of Proxima Midnight – whose character design was done by DNEG – and Corvus Glaive was based on motion capture data either provided by the film-makers or created in house at DNEG. Both Proxima and Corvus involved layers of additional creature FX work including complex hair and costume simulations along with muscle deformation work. DNEG also built a complex face rig for Proxima to allow for animation of dialogue.
We completed digi double work for a number of other characters including Drax, Mantis and Black Widow, Falcon Captain America and Scarlet Witch for whom a high resolution digi double was built from scratch.
In addition to the creature and character work, DNEG created environments for Edinburgh, Knowhere and Wakanda. Our work includes a CG version of Edinburgh train station based on extensive on-set photography, complete and destroyed versions of Knowhere and the Collector’s ship, the extension of the Wakanda jungle which was particularity complex in terms of integration with the foreground plates.
