A new TV spot for James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" film has sparked a debate among fans about the appearance of the titular character. The 30-second spot, titled "Icon," features David Corenswet as Superman flying through a frozen tundra. Some viewers have noted that Superman's face looks a little off in the shot, leading to speculation about the use of CGI.
However, Gunn has clarified that there is no CGI in Superman's face in the spot. He explained that the unusual look is due to the use of a wide-angle lens at close range. "People's faces can look different when you put a wide-angle lens up close," Gunn said. "The background plate in Svalbard [Norway] is 100% real as is David."
Gunn's explanation has not satisfied all viewers. Some have pointed out that the wide-angle lens does not explain the unnatural look of Superman's face. They have also noted that the CGI in other parts of the spot is not as noticeable.
Despite the controversy, the TV spot has generated excitement for the upcoming "Superman" film. The film is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025.
